Waking Up At 4:50 A.M

It is 5:35 A.M. right now as I am starting to write this post. I can hear the roosters crowing, a dog barking, and my dad snoring in the background. Other than that, it’s a complete silence.

Although it takes 3 consecutive alarms set 7 minutes apart to wake me up this early, this habit has positively impacted my life the most.

Different religions teach us the importance of waking up early. There is a concept of waking up for Fajr prayer before sunrise in Islam, the concept of Brahma Muhurta in Hinduism, and multiple references in the bible regarding this topic.

Despite these references, the benefits of waking up early extend far beyond religious practices. For me, these hours have become sacred. Whether it’s writing a blog post, going for a walk, or simply meditating, the early morning hours is when I find clarity. Science backs this up, too. Studies show that our willpower and focus are often at their peak during the first few hours of waking.

But let me be honest: waking up early isn’t easy. It took months of trial and error to be able to consistently wake up early. I’ve learned that the key isn’t just setting alarms but building habits that support this lifestyle. A consistent bedtime, limiting screen time before sleep, and having a definite purpose after you wake up are some key things that help me wake up early.

And let’s talk about purpose. Why wake up early if all you’re going to do is scroll through social media or stare blankly into space? So it is important to figure out what truly matters to you and dedicate time to it. For some, it might be meditation or exercise. For others, it might be pursuing a side hustle or reading a book they’ve been putting off. Whatever it is, those early hours can be your golden opportunity to focus on yourself without interruptions.

Now, at 6:20 A.M., the sun is beginning to rise. The faint hues of pink and orange are spilling across the sky. I feel happy that I have finished writing this post just before sunrise. Now it is time to go for a run.
