December 2023 – KDP Income Report Low Content Publishing

I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. I hope this year is going to be the best year for you.

In this short blog post, I am going to share my detailed income report and the things that I have learned during this month.

December is the month when the sales of books tend to be significantly higher compared to other months. I too saw a comparatively higher number of sales this month.

This is my fourth month publishing on KDP in a new account. I have published around 25 books to date in this account which has made me a total of $529.86. But not all of the royalties were profit.

A significant percentage of the royalty was spent on Ads.

I spent a total of $262.63 on Amazon Ads. The Average cost of sale for this month was 24.71% which is fairly good compared to the 45% ACOS of the previous month.

Currently, I have stopped all the Ads as the ACOS increased significantly after the end of Christmas.

Deducting the Gross Royalties from the Ad Spend we get the Net Royalties of $267.23 for December.

Also, we finally made a profit on this new publishing account in December.

Things I Learned While Publishing Low Content Books on KDP During December:

  1. The 80/20 Principle holds true for KDP publishing as well. 80% of the royalties are brought by 20 % of the books. Also, I learned that it only takes one book to take off to significantly increase your sales. Out of the $529.86, $282.75 were brought in by a single book. So, just keep on publishing books, and don’t expect every one of your books to sell.
  2. Ads are important. Out of 268 books that sold in December, 133 were sold via Ads. But apart from just getting the sales, Ads helped me to collect important data that helped to make correct publishing decisions. I had one book that just didn’t sell even after spending around $20 on Keyword Targeting Ads and $2 on Product Targeting Ads. I was thinking what is wrong with this book? After checking the cover, title, description, and A+ content, I realized that there was a mistake in the description of the book. So, customers just clicked the Ad and never made any purchase because of an error in the description. I immediately turned off the Ads and updated the description. After the description was updated I ran the Ads again. I instantly got sales after spending just a dollar on Keyword Targeting. So, try to collect data from the Ad campaign and optimize your listing accordingly.

So, this was my income report for December 2023. I hope you learned something valuable from this blog post.

And once again Happy New Year!

Thanks for reading.
